WHY DO PEOPLE GET CIRCUMCISED?

Why do people get circumcised, is a question some people ask. Circumcisions are carried out for many reasons, including religious, cultural, aesthetic and medical reasons.

Circumcision is the surgical removal of a fold of skin (the `foreskin’ or `prepuce’) that covers the head (glans) of the un-erect penis. Circumcision is one of the most common medical procedures in the world, with 25 circumcisions performed every minute. It is also one of the oldest and one of the simplest.

Religious and cultural circumcisions are common amongst Muslims, Jews and Christians.

There is some evidence that adult male circumcision has health benefits including:

  • A decreased risk of urinary tract infections
  • A reduced risk of some sexually transmitted diseases in men
  • Protection against penile cancer and a reduced risk of cervical cancer in female sex partners
  • A decreased risk of tight foreskin that cannot be retracted (Phimosis)
  • A reduced risk of foreskin that retracts but cannot be pulled back easily (Paraphimosis)
  • A decreased risk of recurrent infections under the foreskin (Balanitis)
  • A reduced risk of chronically inflamed foreskin (Balanitis Xerotica Obliterans)
  • Protection against tearing of the foreskin or pain during sexual activity.

Surgeons at Circumcision Clinic Glasgow are extremely experienced in performing religious, cultural and medical circumcisions. The clinic caters for all ages of male patients and offers full counselling and aftercare services.
